It is no secret that Rhett has been blessed with many years of sobriety in a recovery program. Many know that Michelle has also spent the last several years as an active member of a recovery support group.

One weekend, in early November 2022, in Decatur, AL there was a a recovery convention at Joe Wheeler State Park. Michelle had just been sick all week, but wanted to attend the recovery convention. Fortunately, she had been fever free for more than 24 hours before the recovery support speaker was scheduled to speak. She drove over to Wheeler Lake to spend time with her friends at the convention and grow in her recovery. Michelle listened to the speaker and stayed to play bingo with everyone. Just by accident, she sat across from Bill, who happened to be Rhett’s recovery sponsor. Michelle and Bill introduced themselves, talked, and played bingo next to each other.

Rhett had been taking a nap during the speaker meeting that was the motivation for Michelle to attend the convention. Rhett he had heard the speaker by the fire pit the night before and didn’t think he would enjoy her talk. After the recovery support speaker was done, Rhett came to find Bill at bingo. Rhett sat next to Bill and across from Michelle.

This is when Bill introduced Rhett to Michelle. Michelle thought he was very handsome, even if he did look like he just woke up from a nap, but maybe was probably a little too old for her by the looks of his salt and pepper hair.

Nonetheless, Michelle went back to her recovery support friends to enjoy fellowship at dinner, but decided to sit with Rhett during that evening’s recovery speaker meeting. She was impressed to learn he stood up when they called out the sobriety countdown and he had 12 years.

After the recovery speaker finished their talk, Michelle and Rhett went outside to enjoy the evening by the fire pit. It was freezing, in fact, probably one of the first sub 32ºF nights of the fall that year. Michelle’s jacket was not equipped for the weather, but talking to Rhett at the fire pit was exhilarating and nothing was going to cut the conversation short. Michelle and Rhett spent 2 hours shivering and talking before Michelle had to go home to take care of her dog, Scout.

It took a little while for Michelle and Rhett’s romance to progress to more than friends. (Michelle’s fault – thinking Rhett may be too old for her.) But during that time, she could not get Rhett out of her head, as they continued to bump into one another outside each of their respective recovery support meeting halls. Unbeknownst to either of them, they both attended their respective meetings, which coincidentally were sister recovery groups that were co-located, only separated by a wall.

This allowed Michelle to “check up on” Rhett periodically to see if he was still as handsome as she remembered… And….. He was….

Finally, towards the end of February 2023, Michelle decided to give Rhett a try. She would invite him over to the house to sit by the fire pit just like they did on the night they met. They talked and talked by the fire, and Rhett really listened and payed attention to Michelle. Eventually, Michelle took Rhett hiking in the woods and purposely got lost to see how he would react. Rhett passed the test and the rest was history.

Nothing would or could keep us apart from that point forward. We knew we were destined for our forever happily ever after for the rest of our lives.
